They were abandoned by their former owner when he lost his home in foreclosure.
This guy had kept a few dogs in his backyard as guard dogs. He said he didn't trust banks so kept his cash and assets in his house and put dogs around the house.
I never personally knew him. He had posted an ad for his dogs on Craigslist (thanks to his last bit of kindness for the dogs) and I saw it.
The ad I saw was for Millaii. He for some reason only had Millaii in his ad, and not Anko.
The picture of Millaii resembled my dog Ginger so much, I couldn't just move on without contacting him.
On the phone the guy said the pound would come and collect the dogs in a day or two. He would have to evacuate soon too.
The pound in Riverside - where the impounded animals have only 3 days to live.
I wondered for a short while, and decided to come get the dogs otherwise - How would I be able to sleep at night if I didn't??
There were 54 miles from my house to his.
I took off after dropping of my kids at school on the following morning.
The dogs were both sweet - in the scorching hot, dry weather. Chained to the dog house in the middle of the big backyard. There was no toys or blankets around.
They were both female German Shepherd mix. Their original names - Lady and Princess.
Both young, Lady just before 2 years, and Princess about 6 months.
They were not fixed, and never given shots, or never even been walked.
The guy said Lady had just had babies about a month before. Her breasts were hanging low, still big and flabby.
He said he had found homes for the puppies.

The food and water were kept in big buckets by the dog house, and they looked like they had been sitting there for months.
The water had turned green and the dog food looked like rocks. I didn't even realize it was food at first.
I brought Lady (Millaii) home first. I didn't think I had room for two in my home.
I was going to find a foster home for Princess and come back and get her.
Well - it had turned out that dogs with no shots were almost impossible to find even foster homes.
I had to go back there 2 days later any way to get Princess so she would not be taken to the pound.
Without another prospective foster home, I ended up with two medium size, sweet and shy homeless dogs in my 3-bedroom townhome in Cypress.
